Bonphotage Chicago Pre-wedding Session - Chicago Art Institute and Chicago Riverwalk - Jialin and Lilyanne

It is always a profound honor to capture a couple's love story, and photographing Jialin and Lilyanne’s wedding day at the Adler Planetarium was an absolute dream! While the wedding day itself is a whirlwind of emotion, family, and celebration, sometimes the timeline just doesn't allow for every single photo location you dreamed of.

That is exactly why Jialin and Lily Anne opted for a dedicated, post-wedding portrait session. We spent a glorious, relaxed afternoon capturing their newlywed bliss at two of the city's most iconic locations: the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Riverwalk - complete with a sweet stop for gelato!

When it comes to Chicago wedding photography, few backdrops rival the timeless, architectural grandeur of the Art Institute. Without the pressure of a rushing bridal party or a ticking cocktail hour clock, J & L were able to simply breathe and be present with one another. We wandered through the stunning grounds, utilizing the classic columns, the sweeping staircases, and the lush, manicured greenery of the South Gardens. The architecture provided an elegant, editorial feel to their portraits, perfectly framing their effortless style.

After capturing the classic romance at the museum, we transitioned to the vibrant energy of Michigan Avenue and the Chicago Riverwalk. The beauty of a separate portrait day is the ability to shift the mood entirely. As we strolled along the water, with the city's famous bridges and skyscrapers towering above, the session took on a fun, candid, and deeply authentic vibe.

To cap off an already perfect afternoon, J & L grabbed some gelato. Capturing them laughing, sharing a sweet treat, and simply enjoying togetherness resulted in some of the most genuine, joyful images of the day. It was a beautiful reminder that your wedding photos don't just have to be about the ceremony - they can be about the quiet, fun moments you share as a newly married couple.

If you are currently planning your wedding and struggling to fit all your dream photo locations into a tight itinerary, adding a post-wedding portrait session is a game-changer. Here is why we love this trend at Bonphotage:

  • Zero Timeline Stress: Wedding days move incredibly fast. A separate session allows you to move at a relaxed pace, entirely free from the anxiety of making it to your reception on time.

  • Endless Location Options: Want photos at the lakefront, the Art Institute, and a rooftop? A dedicated portrait day makes it possible to hit all the locations you couldn't squeeze into the wedding day.

  • Chasing the Perfect Light: We can schedule your portrait session precisely during "golden hour" for that dreamy, romantic glow, which isn't always possible on a strict wedding day timeline.

  • Wardrobe Round Two: You spend so much time and money on your wedding attire - why only wear it once? It is the perfect excuse to put your wedding dress or suit back on and have fun without worrying about keeping it pristine for the ceremony!

Bonphotage Chicago Film Wedding Photography - Adler Planetarium - Jialin & Lilyanne

There are weddings you photograph and weddings that photograph you back. J + L's day at Adler Planetarium was the second kind. I've been doing this long enough (over a decade!) to know when something is going to stay with me - not just in a hard drive folder, but in the way you remember a smell or a piece of music. This one had that quality from the moment I pulled up to the Museum Campus and saw the limestone terrace stretched out toward Lake Michigan, the whole Chicago skyline sitting quietly on the other side of the water like it had been waiting. And J & L’s love story, that stretches across international borders and over time, really something extraordinary.

Most people know Adler as a science museum. The couples who choose it for their wedding know something else - that the terrace on the east side of that dome sits at the very tip of the Museum Campus peninsula, with Lake Michigan wrapping around three sides and an unobstructed view of the Chicago skyline that doesn't exist anywhere else in the city at quite that angle. Sailboats drift behind the ceremony arch like they were hired. No ballroom, no chandelier, no interior does what that backdrop does. It is, simply put, one of the most cinematic ceremony settings in Chicago. And I don't say that lightly.

L got ready in a robe and heart-shaped "Just Married" sunglasses, sitting in a bath of soft morning light with her dress hanging above her. That image - the playfulness, the ease - told me everything I needed to know about her. There was a moment when all the bridesmaids were drinking champagne by the bathtub, when the faucet turned on accidentally - it was an unforgettable wedding moment, filled with so much laughter and the images are everything. L wore Bella Belle heelsflats, laid out on white tulle with garden flowers tucked between them. Peonies, ranunculus, sweet peas, blue delphinium. The same palette that would run through every arrangement of the day. She wasn't nervous in the way brides sometimes are. She was just ready.

The florals lining the aisle were something. Flowerchild did what they do best - creating absolute floral magic! Low, overflowing ground arrangements in blush, peach, lavender, and white - roses, peonies, Queen Anne's lace, trailing greenery that crept across the limestone like it grew there. The arch at the altar was full and abundant, the kind of floral design that reads as wild and intentional at the same time. The guests were standing as L walked down the aisle - all of Chicago standing with them across the water. So many Chicago perfect moments occured, like the blue helicopter cutting low across the lake behind the groomsmen just moments before their first look with L. Nobody planned it. Nobody could have. The groomsmen turned and waved. We got the shot.

There's a photograph from that ceremony - the aerial view, drone footage from directly above - that shows the full scope of what that day looked like. The white runner stretching across the terrace. The guests fanned out on either side. The arch at the altar. And behind it all, Lake Michigan and the city. When I look at that image I still feel the size of it. When J + L were pronounced married, L raised her bouquet toward the sky. J's face said everything words couldn't.

After the ceremony, the light started doing what late afternoon Chicago light does in late spring - it goes pink and gold and impossibly soft, and the skyline turns from architecture into something that looks painted. This evening had the most perfect weather and lighting imaginable. We walked them to the water's edge. L's cathedral veil caught the breeze off the lake and went fully horizontal in one frame, the entire Chicago skyline behind them, the Willis Tower glowing. That image is one of my favorites I've ever made. Not because of the technical execution of that moment on medium format film, but because of what's in his face when he looks at her. We also got the quiet ones. The veil portraits, shot through the tulle so the couple is framed in diffused light, almost abstract. Those are the images I live for - the ones where the emotion is more present than the subject.

Inside, the sweetheart table was buried in florals. Black and white film captured the two of them mid-laugh during toasts - L covering her mouth, J fully, freely laughing. No posing. Just a moment of true, unfiltered joy. On the table: dessert shots, cake, small bites arranged on white trays, and both pairs of their "Just Married" heart sunglasses (late night flatlays forever!) A detail so specific to them it couldn't have belonged to any other couple. Lavender taper candles. Amethyst glassware. Handwritten place cards with ribbon. The kind of reception table that holds its own story.

I became a photographer because of the feeling in a room when two people are so fully present with each other that the air changes. You can't manufacture that. You can only be ready for it. J + L gave us a full day of that. The sunglasses in the bathtub. The helicopter over the lake. The veil on the lake at golden hour. The laugh during the toast. None of those were on any shot list. They were just the day, unfolding the way a real day does, with all its texture and surprise and feeling. This is why I still press the shutter, roll the film, and stay present all day. Not for the skyline - though the skyline doesn't hurt - but for the moments that happen inside of it. The small, true ones. Chicago keeps giving us days like this. And every time, I'm grateful all over again.

Bonphotage Chicago Wedding Photography, Videography and Content Creation - Armour House Wedding

There are some venues that feel like they were designed for love stories - and Armour House is undeniably one of them. A longtime favorite of the Romano sisters, this historic Lake Forest estate brings together European architecture, sprawling gardens, and that unmistakable old-world romance Bonphotage couples adore. Olivia and Robert’s wedding embraced every bit of that magic!

Set in the heart of fall, their day unfolded in a palette of warm, earthy tones - burnt golds, soft greens, ivory florals, and the kind of gentle amber light that can only happen in October. Armour House in autumn is a dream, and Olivia looked like she had stepped straight out of a couture editorial as her bridesmaids fluffed her veil in the garden, the sun slipping perfectly behind the pergola.

Every moment felt cinematic.
Every detail felt intentional.
Every frame - especially on film - felt timeless.

Guests arrived to the soft rustling of fall leaves and the crispness of the season. Olivia and Robert exchanged vows surrounded by historic columns and turning foliage, a tableau that could only exist at Armour House. As the sun dipped low, it gifted us a stunning sunset - a golden halo behind the couple that turned their portraits into painterly perfection. There’s truly nothing like the way Armour House catches the light.

From the elegant architecture to the grand staircase to the manicured gardens that seem to glow this time of year, this venue continues to be one of our most-requested locations - and Olivia and Robert showed exactly why.

Their celebration moved seamlessly into an evening of heartfelt toasts, candlelit dinner, laughter, and joy. It was classic. It was emotional. It was the kind of wedding that reminds you why you fell in love with telling stories through imagery in the first place.

To Olivia and Robert - thank you for inviting us into your breathtaking fall wedding day. Armour House will always be special to us, and now it holds one more gorgeous love story!

Bonphotage California and Chicago Wedding Film Photography and Videography - Sunstone Villa Winery Santa Ynez Valley

Tucked into the golden hills of Santa Ynez, Justin and Mikyla’s wedding at Sunstone Villa unfolded like a dream - one that whispered of Tuscany, haute couture, and a love story written across continents. With its ivy-clad stone walls, arched doorways, and old-world charm, Sunstone Winery - an architectural love letter to the Italian countryside - proved the perfect stage for a wedding that was equal parts elegance, energy, and effortless style.

From the moment guests arrived at this villa-inspired haven, it was clear: this was not your ordinary celebration. The air pulsed with color - bold blooms in passionate fuschias, deep corals, and golden ochres adorned tables and lined the aisle, a vibrant contrast to the warm neutral tones of the villa. It was as if the very spirit of Italy had stepped into California for the day.

Mikyla’s fashion journey was a story in itself, with three distinct and striking couture gowns that each captured a facet of her personality. For the ceremony, she chose timeless romance: a structured silhouette with cascading lace and an ethereal veil that caught the golden hour light like a dream. For cocktail hour, she stunned in a short, playful gown with a dramatic and textured veil.

Justin, ever the perfect complement, wore a classic tux with just enough European flair to hint at the couple’s international spirit. Their guest list read like a passport -dear friends and loved ones from across the globe, dressed to the nines, bringing their unique elegance and cultural flavor to the day.

Together, Justin and Mikyla curated a celebration that transcended borders and blended modern sophistication with the old-world magic of a Tuscan escape. Every detail - from the bold floral installations to the candlelit alfresco dinner under a starlit sky - was a reflection of their impeccable taste and vibrant love story.

This was more than a wedding. It was an experience, a fashion moment, a feast for the senses - and above all, a heartfelt celebration of two souls whose union feels as timeless and breathtaking as the venue that witnessed it.
